The most recent adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s stories of the magical land of Oz arrives in theaters tomorrow, March 8th.
Disney Pictures brings us Oz the Great and Powerful, telling the story of how the wizard arrived in the land of Oz.
I had the opportunity to preview the movie earlier this week, and I was so excited about it! The Wizard of Oz has been one of favorite movies since I was a little girl, and I was counting the weeks until this preview (just ask hubby, I’m sure he’ll tell you my excitement was bordering on obnoxious). The movie did not disappoint! James Franco was the ideal illusionist-turned-wizard Oscar “Oz” Diggs, flanked by two adorable sidekicks Finley and China Girl, played by Zach Braff and Joey King, respectively. The witches were played to perfection by three fitting actresses: Theodora by Mila Kunis, Evanora by Rachel Weisz and Glinda by Michelle Williams.
Oz the Great and Powerful is rated PG, and while there are a few scenes that might be a bit scary for small children, such as the tornado sequence in the beginning, and the appearance of the Wicked Witch of the West, it is definitely for all ages. The movie, just like the classic Wizard of Oz from 1939, starts in black and white and turns color when Oz enters the land of Oz. The colors are spectacular, the scenery fascinating, and of course you’ll recognize classic items such as the Deadly Poppies, the rainbow horses, flying monkeys, Munchkins, and of course the beloved yellow brick road.
With a whole new slew of characters and scenes to love, Oz the Great and Powerful will become a classic in it’s own right.
Disclosure: Disney Pictures invited me to a prescreening of Oz The Great and Powerful. As always, all opinions are my own.
